The Itinerary

Southwestern Nova Scotia around Yarmouth holds the oldest and largest Acadian community in the Maritimes: the Municipality of Argyle, where 65% still speak French. West Pubnico, founded in 1653, is the oldest Acadian village in America still inhabited by direct descendants of its founders.

Yarmouth itself, the CAT ferry port from Bar Harbor (Maine), welcomes visitors with its Victorian downtown and the Yarmouth County Museum. The Cape Forchu Lighthouse, 10 minutes west, is one of Nova Scotia's most spectacular — its "applecore" shape is unique in the world, set on basalt cliffs lashed by the Atlantic.

Route 335, the "Acadian Shore," descends through villages: Belle Côte, Wedgeport (former world capital of giant tuna fishing), West Pubnico with its Acadian Historical Village (Le Village historique acadien de la Nouvelle-Écosse). At Lower West Pubnico, Dennis Point Cafe serves lobster straight off the boat — this coast lands 60% of Nova Scotia's lobster.
