The Itinerary

The Annapolis Valley west of Halifax is Nova Scotia's historic and wine-growing heart. Sandwiched between North Mountain and South Mountain, its warmer microclimate supports apple growing (60% of provincial production) and viticulture. A 50 km loop combines Acadian heritage, wineries and Fundy cliffs.

Wolfville, a friendly university town (Acadia University), is surrounded by wineries: Domaine de Grand Pré, Luckett Vineyards (with its famous red phone booth), Blomidon Estate. Grand-Pré National Historic Site (Parks Canada, UNESCO 2012) commemorates the Acadian Grand Dérangement of 1755 — the deportation of 10,000 Acadians to Louisiana and beyond, which created the Cajun people.

Highway 358 then climbs to North Mountain and the Lookoff (panorama over 5 valleys and Minas Basin) before descending to Hall's Harbour, a picturesque fishing port known for scallops and giant tides. Cape Blomidon at the tip is the "land of Glooscap" in Mi'kmaq mythology — 200 m red cliffs falling into Fundy.
