The Itinerary
The Bay of Fundy has the world's largest tides (up to 16 m). When the tide rises, it pushes a wave — the tidal bore — that runs upstream against rivers flowing into the bay. The Shubenacadie River near Truro is the world's site for tidal bore rafting: the only commercial activity of its kind.
From Truro, the "Hub of Nova Scotia," Highway 215 follows the south shore of Cobequid Basin. Tidal Bore Park in Truro itself lets you watch the bore twice daily (check tide tables). At Maitland, Shubenacadie River Adventures and River Runners operate zodiac rafting trips: you ride the wave up to 5 metres tall in certain conditions, on red mud.
Burntcoat Head Park, already covered, marks the highest recorded tides in the world. En route, Shubenacadie's Provincial Wildlife Park lets you observe local animals. For cultural depth, Glooscap Heritage Centre (Mi'kmaq) in Truro is an excellent stop.
