The Itinerary

The Marine Drive (Route 7) along Nova Scotia's eastern shore is the antithesis of the Cabot Trail: lightly travelled, wild, dotted with small Acadian and Scottish fishing ports. It's the forgotten coast — and that's exactly its charm.

Tangier, 1h30 from Halifax, is famous for Coastal Adventures — Nova Scotia's sea-kayak pioneer — which runs trips to the 100 Wild Islands Archipelago, a chain of deserted islands among Atlantic Canada's most beautiful. 30 minutes east, Sheet Harbour and Marble Mountain Falls deserve a stop.

Liscomb at the end of the route hosts Liscomb Lodge — a government inn (Nova Scotia Parks) with access to a 6 km river trail along the Liscomb River, renowned for salmon fishing. For history fans, Memory Lane Heritage Village (Lake Charlotte) recreates a 1940s fishing community. Don't miss: Clam Harbour Beach and its annual sand sculpture festival (August).
