The Itinerary

Cape Breton Island's northern tip, beyond the official Cabot Trail loop, is one of the Maritimes' most isolated and spectacular regions. Meat Cove, reached by 7 km of gravel road, is Nova Scotia's northernmost inhabited village — perched on 350 m cliffs above the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

From Ingonish (east Cabot Trail), Route 312 climbs Smokey Mountain — panoramic Atlantic views — then crosses Neil's Harbour (lobster fishing port with iconic lighthouse) and Dingwall. At Cape North, turn off toward Bay St. Lawrence: a wild 25 km road to grey-seal viewing, pelagic birds and pilot whales.

The final road to Meat Cove (last 7 km gravel) crosses wild Highlands — horses and moose common. The Meat Cove Campground perched on the cliff edge offers one of Canada's most memorable nights. Trails: Meat Cove Mountain Trail (4 km, views to the Magdalen Islands in clear weather), Cape St. Lawrence (the extreme northwest). Worth knowing: White Point Loop offers kayaking among seals.
