The Itinerary
Eastern Cape Breton around Sydney and Glace Bay is the Maritimes' industrial cradle — first through undersea coal mines, then with the birth of transatlantic radio. The area today keeps a unique working-class identity and fascinating history.
The Cape Breton Miners' Museum at Glace Bay offers an authentic descent into the Ocean Deeps Colliery — guided by former miners (Men of the Deeps, the legendary choir) who sing in the gallery. The Marconi National Historic Site (Parks Canada) at Table Head marks the spot from which Guglielmo Marconi transmitted the first official transatlantic message in 1902.
Sydney itself holds the historic Pier district (19th-century architecture), the "World's Largest Fiddle" (18 m statue) at the port, and Membertou Heritage Park (Mi'kmaq). Short distance away: Louisbourg (existing road trip), Big Pond and the home of Rita MacNeil — the region's famous singer — converted into a tearoom.
