The Itinerary

The Northumberland Strait separating Nova Scotia from Prince Edward Island offers the warmest swimming beaches north of Florida — water regularly reaches 22-23°C in July-August thanks to the Gulf Stream warming on shallow sand banks.

Pictou, nicknamed "Birthplace of New Scotland," commemorates the 1773 arrival of 189 Scottish settlers on the ship Hector — the first Highlanders to land in Nova Scotia. A full-scale replica of the Hector is moored at Pictou Harbour Heritage Quay as a living museum. The Festival of the Tartans in July celebrates Gaelic heritage.

Provincial beaches at Caribou (the PEI ferry port), Melmerby Beach and Rushton's Beach feature red sand, shallow warm water — family paradise. The Northumberland Ferries vessel runs from Caribou to Wood Islands (PEI, 75 min). Note: Glenora distillery at Mabou (on Cape Breton, 2 h away) produces Canada's only single malt (tours available).
